A Printer That Prints LED Lights

A Printer That Prints LED Lights

GE OLEDGeneral Electric has created a machine that “prints” lights onto sheets of special film. It coats an 8 inch wide plastic film with chemicals then seals the film with a layer of metal foil. An electric current is passed through and the sheet lights up with a soft blue-white glow. These lit sheets can then be applied like wallpaper to provide lighting for rooms, although there would still be a need for an eletrical outlet.

Calling them organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs, GE believes these sheets could be the used as light sources in the future although it isn’t cost effective for the average consumer right now. The “light paper” could be wrapped around pillars, applied as blinds, or even have a translucent version applied on windows, to provide a gentle glow after dark. GE believes there are lots of ideas to be done with this technology and will begin to introduce them to the public in 2010.

Sony to Bring 3D Movies to Traditional Theaters Next Year

Sony to Bring 3D Movies to Traditional Theaters Next Year

3D Sony ProjectorIf you love going to a 3D movie, but you hate the long drives and the high prices of getting to an IMAX theater – if there even is one in your area – then your solution may be coming to a regular theater near you next year.

Sony will be demonstrating its latest in digital cinema technology innovation: a single-projector 3D adaptor designed to work specifically with its 4K projectors in movie theaters.

The new adaptor for traditional theater projectors will use the full height of Sony’s 4K imaging device, with the ability to display full 2K images for the left and right eye simultaneously and in parallel, from top and bottom.

The new lens units, models LKRL-A002 (X1.1 -1.9) and LKRL-A003 (X1.9 - 3.3), consists of an optical and mechanical assembly for each left and right eye image. It is designed to meet DCI specifications for 3D digital projection, while overcoming the bandwidth and resolution limitations of currently available 3D systems.

“With the addition of the 3D adaptor to our digital cinema product line-up, Sony can now offer the best of all worlds to exhibition: stunning 4K imagery from 4K movies, and incredible 3D with no triple-flash artifacts,” said Gary Johns, vice president of Sony Electronics’ Digital Cinema Systems Division.

The system was developed to give exhibitors the flexibility to switch between showing 4K and 3D content. The 3D adaptor attaches onto the lens mount of the projector and is compatible with all Sony 4K projectors currently in the field. It can be easily removed or re-attached within minutes.

The 3D adaptor is expected to be available in March 2009.

The new technology will be shown off at ShowEast, the Motion Picture Industry Convention which runs between October 13th and 16th.

The only thing that this blogger really cares about is if the projectors will make it out to us locals in time for the release of the final Harry Potter movie.

Virgin Galactic Says No To Pornography In Space

Virgin Galactic Says No To Pornography In Space

Virgin Galactic, a private company to provide space tourism to wealthy tourists, was offered a million dollars to shoot a sex video while the participants are floating freely without gravity. Will Whitehorn, president of the company, said the offer “was $1 million, up front, for a sex-in-space movie. That money we had to refuse, I’m afraid.”

Space Ship TwoThe offer came from an unidentified party and was not disclosed any further during the International Astronautical Congress in which Whitehorn announced he rejected such a deal.

Beginning late 2009 or early 2010, Virgin Galactic – part of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group — will be offering two hour space flights per person for $200,000. The flight begins at Sierra County, New Mexico and will be carried to 100 kilometers in altitude by the WhiteKnightTwo aircraft, which in turn will release the SpaceShipTwo craft that will allow passengers to experience five minutes of weightlessness as the vehicle reaches the boundaries of the Earth’s atmopshere.

Virgin Galatic has spent about $100 million to develop its business, mainly in research and development of the aircraft by Scaled Composites LLC of Mojave, California and has already received $40 million in deposits from 280 customers.

“Virgin” Galactic did not reveal their reasons for rejecting the million dollar offer for the sex-in-space movie. At $200,000 per person for just five minutes, it would certainly cause hardship to shoot a long one.

Halo Movie Could Respawn With New Script

Halo Movie Could Respawn With New Script

Master ChiefDid you think Hollywood’s scribes just sat on their hands during the 2007-2008 writers strike? Screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, G.I. Joe) didn’t. A self-described Halo fan and the writer for an upcoming Gears of War film, Beattie spent his free time penning a prequel to the plot of the original game. Now he’s in talks with Microsoft to get the movie made, GameDaily reports.

Beattie was not involved with the Halo movie that was planned in 2005 and indefinitely postponed in 2006. Gamers who were desperate to see a decent game-to-movie adaptation had high hopes for that film, to be produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

“The Halo movie in its initial incarnation is dead,” Beattie told reporter John Gaudiosi. “No one is pursuing it any more. When the writers guild strike hit last year I suddenly had three months to write a Halo script.”

He continues:

As a Halo fan what I want to see in a Halo movie is Master Chief kicking alien butt and we have plenty of that. But we’ve also got this great story that goes along with it. I always thought that was the way a Halo story should be so when I got time during the strike I decided to put my money where my mouth was.

Beattie said his script begins with the early years of John, who is kidnapped at age 6 and told he will be a soldier. John’s fate of becoming the hero, Master Chief, becomes apparent as the Covenant begins tearing apart the human race. It’s a story arc inspired by Halo: The Fall of Reach, one of several novels based in the Halo universe.

The next step is to continue discussions with Microsoft. Joe Statton, who wrote all three games and directed the cinematics, “read it and loved it,” Beattie said.
